Advance Voting Opens Today in Alberta: How to Find Where to Vote — and What ID You Need
Advance voting for Alberta's 2026 Referendum runs today through Saturday, October 17, with Election Day on Monday, October 19. Here's what you need to know before you vote.
Find Your Voting Location
Elections Alberta's online "Where to Vote" tool requires your home address to generate results.
Advance voting: You can vote at any advance voting place within your electoral division.
Election Day: You must vote at the location assigned to your physical address.
The tool may use GPS/location data for advance voting, but Election Day locations are based strictly on your home address.
ID Requirements
You must prove both your identity and your current physical address. Accepted options:
One piece of government-issued photo ID showing your name, current physical address, and photo (e.g., Alberta driver's licence or ID card)
Two pieces of ID — both showing your full name, one showing your current physical address
Important: Vouching has been eliminated for 2026. If you arrive without acceptable ID, you cannot vote.
Mailing address exception: If you're already registered at your current physical address, a driver's licence showing only a mailing address (like a PO box) is acceptable. If you've moved or aren't registered, you'll need additional ID proving your physical address.
If Your Driver's Licence Shows an Old Address
You can still vote using two pieces of ID — your licence (proving your name) plus a second document showing your name and current physical address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, health card, or car insurance.
If you have no second document, attestation forms may be available for renters, students in residence, people on reserves or settlements, and those in shelters or community support centres. The form must be completed before you go to a voting place by an authorized signatory (e.g., landlord, caretaker, band manager).
Can You Register at the Polls?
Yes — but it adds time. You'll still need to prove your identity and physical address with accepted ID. Pre-registering is faster.
Voting in Hospitals and Care Homes
Mobile voting stations are set up in hospitals, long-term care and supportive living facilities, and shelters. Residents and in-patients do not need to show ID — a facility representative confirms eligibility instead. Hospital patients must be deemed well enough to vote by facility staff.
Residents may also choose to vote at an advance location in the facility's electoral division or at their assigned Election Day location (with ID).
Bottom Line
Confirm your registration, gather your ID, and check your location at elections.ab.ca before heading out. Advance voting closes Saturday, October 17.
