Medicine Hat Fuel Spill Expected To Hit Downstream Community

A fuel spill in Medicine Hat on the South Saskatchewan River will be hitting Alberta’s eastern neighbour today while the municipal government has yet to post a public notice regarding the potentially dangerous environmental issue.

On Friday, Cypress County had stated the spill originated in Medicine Hat along the industrial areas running along the CPKC rail line and downstream from the city’s water intake facility.

As of Sunday, that post has since been edited, though, the rural municipality states the water supplies for hamlet communities of Hilda and Schuler north of Medicine Hat remain safe as they are sourcing their water from a well.

It’s a different story for the Town of Leader, Sask which is shuttering its water intake system which is fed by the South Saskatchewan River.

“At this time, the town reservoir is full, and we will not need to draw water from the river until the contamination has safely passed our intake,” according to a public notice issued by the municipality. “We are continuing to work closely with the Water Security Agency to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
