🎬 MHPL and Palliser FOM Present Stolen Time: A Film About the Danger of For-Profit Nursing Homes

NB - Kelly Allard is co-chair of the PFOM but does NOT speak for them. Chair Diane MacNaughton is the official PFOM spokesperson.

The Medicine Hat Public Library and Palliser Friends of Medicare (PFOM) are teaming up to show Stolen Time. This 2023 NFB film looks at how private, for-profit nursing homes can hurt seniors.

NFB Canada says -
In Stolen Time, a riveting feature documentary, charismatic elder rights lawyer Melissa Miller and hundreds of aggrieved families take on the corporate for-profit nursing-home industry - an industry notorious for its lack of transparency and accountability.

"Stolen Time" explains that for-profit nursing homes often have:

  • Not enough staff to take care of residents properly.

  • Workers who are overworked and underpaid - which means less time for seniors.

  • Higher rates of infection and death, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film makes a strong point: the conditions of work are the conditions of care. If workers are treated badly, seniors are treated badly too. This is not just a problem in other provinces, the push in Alberta for more for-profit care in our health system is worrying many people. Friends of Medicare has raised concerns about for-profit companies taking over more services, including care for the elderly.
