The 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games are in Town

Around 1,700 athletes plus coaches, and officials have rolled into town - and we mean rolled. Since the Hat doesn’t have commercial passenger service, these incredible competitors and their support crews have made the trek by bus or car. They’ve filled every hotel room. With hotels completely sold out, some families and fans have had to bunk down in Brooks.
This is likely the biggest multi-sport event this city has ever seen.
We’re Not Just Talking About a Tournament
These Games are the qualifier for the World Games in Santiago, Chile, next year. The stakes are high, and so is the energy. All events are free to attend as is the opening ceremony at Co-op Place. Tickets are free for the opening ceremony.

For the first time ever, a Governor General is attending the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, who has an impressive background as a former Supreme Court Justice and UN official has arrived in Medicine Hat. The itinerary has her bowling, cheering on softball and basketball, watching golf, and handing out lunch boxes to volunteers. She’s also speaking at the Opening Ceremony, giving these athletes the kind of VIP treatment they absolutely deserve.

First up, the Opening Ceremony at Co-op Place on August 11 - and yes, tickets are free, but the Family & Friends crew gets early access to snag the best seats before the general public even gets a sniff . But the real after-party? That's the exclusive Family & Friends Reception at Medalta Potteries, a National Historic Site where they used to crank out pottery by the ton. Bringing the Cash
This massive influx of people is expected to bring in about $12 million in economic impact.
We just heard at the Public Services Committee meeting that athletes and visitors are raving about the facilities and the local volunteers. They could still use more volunteers, but they have been shifting volunteers around to get everything covered.
